How to Choose the Best Route to Reach Your Destination
The most direct course on the map isn't always the fastest on the water. If the mark is upwind, the solution is to choose the side that brings you closer to it at a good speed, without entering the dead zone. In a regatta, this also means keeping an eye on the favored side of the course: there may be more wind pressure on one side or a current that helps you move forward.
A practical way to make a decision is to ask yourself three questions while sailing: Is the sail filled? Is the boat picking up speed? Does this course still bring me closer to my destination? If the answer to any of these is “no,” adjust one thing at a time. First, bear away or luff a few degrees. Then trim the sails. Only then should you make a major strategic adjustment.
