It's also worth distinguishing between two concepts. The candle's wick is defined primarily by the actual wind speed, the one that floats on the water. But once on board, you feel the apparent wind: the sum of the actual wind and the wind created by the boat's own movement. The Dead Zone: Why You Can't Ride Straight Into the Wind
No conventional sailboat sails exactly in the direction from which the wind is coming. There is a band in front of the bow where the sails cannot generate useful lift. It is called the dead zone, or non-sailing zone.

How to adjust the mainsail and genoa for each course
